Single-sex schooling: Equivalent to racial segregation or the antidote to failing public schools?

Across the United States, 500+ public schools offer single-sex classes. There also are 116 public all-girl or all-boy academies. Many of these schools are located in struggling urban neighborhoods.

But, lo and behold! Many have proven themselves to be successful, especially in urban locales. Increasingly, researchers find that single-sex schools are part of the solution to the growing "boy gap" in education and the persistent "girl gap" in math and science.

Sensible people would applaud this success and want to see it replicated in other locales.

But, not the American Civil Liberties Union's (ACLU), according to Christina Hoff Sommers in The Atlantic.

Apparently, the ACLU will tolerate none of this success because the organization believes that separating students by gender is equivalent to racial segregation. To put an end to single-sex public schooling, the ALCU has demanded that the U.S. Department of Education issue guidelines to all schools "explaining that programs based on stereotypes are impermissible."

Successful single-sex schools are "morally and legally suspect"?

What constellation do these people live in?

Let the discussion begin...
