"Never be surprised by anything!" Chicago's history teaches.
But, The Motley Monk was more than surprised to read--shocked might be more like it--that the Republican candidate slated to run against Democrat State House Speaker Mike Madigan in Illinois 22nd District, Terrence Goggin, had suddenly withdrawn his candidacy.
Not just withdrawn...but disappeared.
It seems that Goggin, who has run against Madigan three times previously, doesn't exist.
According to an NBC news report, very few people claim to have seen Goggin. There are no known photographs. And, Goggin hasn't organized a political action committee, raised money, or held campaign events and press conferences.
One hour before Madigan's henchmen were to testify on the validity of Goggin's nominating petition signatures on Thursday at the Chicago Board of Elections, Goggin withdrew his candidacy.
It seems that for quite some time, the Chicago Democratic machine has been handpicking Madigan's Republican challengers. In this iteration, none of Goggin's petition circulators have been seen in public. Better yet, nearly every petition sheet evidences family members whose possess identical handwriting.
There's fraud in Chicago Democratic machine politics?
The story gets even better: With Goggin having officially disappeared, no Republican is willing to run against Madigan. According to a Chicago Republican party operative, potential candidates are "too afraid" to run.
Only in Chicago. Don't be surprised by anything.
Let the discussion begin...
