Why? SFAC didn't want White folks present.
According to KING5 News, SPSCC's Program Coordinator for its Diversity and Equity Center, Karama Blackhorn, said the goal was for the staff members of color to have a more honest discussion about race. Blackhorn--who assisted in writing the invitation--said:
When trying to explicitly talk about race it can be a really difficult
conversation for a lot of people.
The email invitation said:
If you want to create space for White folks to meet and work on
racism, White supremacy, and White privilege to better our campus
community and yourselves, please feel free to do just that.
SFAC sent the invitation to all 300 SPSCC staff members. But, the email's recipients had to reply to SFAC to find out the confidential date and time of the event that would "build support and community" solely for people of color.
Thus, achieving the stated goal required disinviting (aka, "discriminating against") White employees (i.e., being "un-diverse" and "non-inclusive").
Realizing the problems the invitation raised, SPSCC academic administrators responded quickly (aka, went into "damage control mode"). The Dean of College Relations, Purce Braseth, said:
It was obviously a mistake. If you want to come you should be
able to come, that just makes a richer conversation.
Braseth noted that the best way to celebrate and discuss diversity at SPSCC is to include everyone. Braceth added that the group apologized the next day and canceled the event.
A "mistake"? At best, how about a stunning lack of awareness?
Imagine this scenario:
A group of White folk at SPSCC takes SFAC at its word and
meets to work on strengthening racism, White supremacy, and
White privilege to better the SPSCC campus community and
How long would it have taken the Obama Justice Department--with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder leading the charge--to have the organizers of this "happy hour" tarred and feathered by the mainstream press and then indicted by a federal grand jury?
So much for the unfettered pursuit of truth at SPSCC.
