Well, not exactly $7M.
- Florida will pay $3M in cash.
- The $4M difference will come from McElwain (who will pay $2M in cash) and another $2M to play one game at Florida.
So, depending upon how the accountants crunch and report the numbers, Florida will pay anywhere from $3M to $5M. That is, unless the other $2M is part of McElwain's signing bonus.
Imagine that! What's touted as "the largest buyout of a coach in college football history"...in an era when administrators of higher education across the United States are crying that they're "cash strapped."
Well, apparently not...when it comes to the pigskin.
With the cost of higher education rising faster than that of healthcare, guess who's really paying Florida's bill to obtain McElwain's expertise? The Sunshine State's taxpayers and tuition-paying students.
What was it Nero said about "bread and circuses" (panem et circenses) for the plebeians? They're ignorant of their civic duty? Their civic concern is eroding? "Just throw some bread and circuses their way."
