The idea was that Obamacare was larded with so many goodies that would make the American public ever so much more happy and content. They should just trust the politicians who were pushing for the bill and all would be well once again in the United States.
This particular provision is aimed to “a restaurant or similar retail food establishment that is part of a chain with 20 or more locations.” In effect, any establishment with 20+ locations that sells food would be governed by the provision. In short, the provision was intended to apply to food chains.
In 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed a regulation to implement the provision. But, rather than applying it only to food chains, the regulation was expanded to include grocery stores and convenience stores which sell prepared food. In effect, if an establishment sold prepared food (like a chain of food stores like Whole Foods), it would be required to include nutritional information on the products it sells.
The final regulation, released in late 2014, reached even further. According to an article in the Daily Signal, movie theaters and bowling alleys, among other locations, must now comply by disclosing the nutritional information of what appears on their menus, including popcorn and hot dogs, for example.
Well, at least there’s one net positive. All of those regulations require the hiring of more regulators to oversee the establishments governed by those regulations. That means unemployment will decrease and those regulators will pay federal income taxes. Without all of those regulations, all of those regulators would be unemployed, living on the taxpayers’ dole.
Ooppppssss…wrongo! It’s the taxpayers who are paying the salaries and benefits to all of those regulators to control the taxpayers’ food choices.
Come to think of it, there isn’t a net positive...unless one is a socialist!
Let the discussion begin…
