As a candidate for Governor, Rauner characterized Illinois' spending and State worker salaries as “excessive.” He also vowed that spending out of the Governor's office would be lower under his administration than it was under Quinn's.
It might very well be the case that finding talented staff to tackle the problems of the magnitude confronting the State of Illinois requires increasing salaries, perhaps even dramatically so. And that’s what Rauner claims is the case, stating:
The people we’re bringing into our administration, most of them are
taking significant cuts compared to what they were making on the
outside. I pay what it needs for the talent that we’ve got.
That said, the salaries reported thus far—not all new hires have been paid yet—indicate that “crony socialism” in Illinois has morphed into “crony capitalism” with only one difference: As bad as it was, the taxpayers were actually doling out less for the tax-and-spend liberal’s cronies.
