"A college education is a right" President Obama believes and tells anyone who's willing to listen. And he has also called upon Congress to fund community college tuition with taxpayers' $$$s.
Life...liberty...the pursuit of happiness...a college degree?
The logic behind the President's logic is that, in this era of United States history, a college degree will lead ineluctably to greater happiness. The failure to earn a college degree will lead ineluctably to greater unhappiness.
If that logic is true, then 25% of U.S. Presidents must have been very unhappy: Harry Truman, William McKinley, Grover Cleveland, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, Millard Fillmore, Zachary Taylor, William Henry Harrison, Martin Van Buren, Andrew Jackson and George Washington.
Young adults won't experience life, liberty, and pursue happiness if they fail to earn a college degree?
According to The Motley Monk fave, Pamela Villareal:
- 4 of the top 10 jobs most difficult to fill these days do not require a college degree.
- Some of the fastest job growth taking place today is in skilled-trade industries. Guess what? They also don't require a college degree. These jobs include brick masonry, plumbing, pipefitting, construction, insurance sales, etc.
- Between 2010 and 2020, it is estimated that a number of fast-growing occupations will require only vocational training or an associate's degree. This is especially true in the health care industry. There's a 44% increase in demand for diagnostic medical sonographers, a 41% increase in occupational therapy assistant jobs, and a 38% increase in opportunities for dental hygienists.
Since 1990, college tuition and fees have increased 160%, inflation-adjusted. Those $$$s aren't going to teaching and learning but to pay the salaries of bloating administrations, hiring adjunct to replace full-time professors, and creating Disneyland-like campuses so students will be able to distract themselves from the arduous rigors of studying.
Guess who's very happy these days?
And guess who's funding all of that happiness through the federal college loan racket and Congress if it decides to pay for community college tuition?
Let the discussion begin...
