In his initial post, Fr. Sawyer--who claims himself to be aligned with the pro-life cause but not some of its tactics--diverted attention away from what Dr. Deborah Nucatola of Planned Parenthood admitted in the video to be doing in her medical practice. Instead, Fr. Sawyer focused upon the folks who produced the video, the Center for Medical Progress (CPM), arguing that they selectively edited the full, unedited undercover video. That editing, Fr. Sawyer asserted, was "by any fair standard, wildly misleading."
Why? The producers wanted to ensure maximum impact that would promote CPM's anti-abortion agenda.
His conclusion? They "tell a different—but no less troubling—story than the one that has been covered in most of the news pieces about this issue."
The problem, in Fr. Sawyer's estimation, is one of tactics. He writes:
C.M.P.’s edited version of the video, not to mention
the undercover sting operation itself, is in many respects
deeply unfair. Nonetheless, we do not need to defend
the video’s production in order to be—properly and
appropriately—shocked that a physician can discuss
how best to harvest fetal tissue without ever appearing
to be troubled by the fact that the fetus is human.
How's one to make sense of this interpretation of CPM's video?
The goal of evangelization has always been conversion from sin. Perhaps Fr. Sawyer is taking his cue from Pope Francis. Implementing the tactic of empathizing with and not judging sinners--because, after all, the murder of unborn children is sinful--Fr. Sawyer hopes to open abortionists' hearts to the joy of the gospel.
Understood this way, the problem with CMP's editing is that it reveals insensitivity on the part of the folks at CPM to what Fr. Sawyer called Dr. Deborah Nucatola's "moving explanation" about how she ended up focusing her medical practice upon abortion (@ 2:10 in the full video).
Needless to say, Fr. Sawyer's post has raised quite a few eyebrows.
That said, diverting attention away from the facts and to those who exposed the facts suggests that Fr. Sawyer shares a lot in common with the mainstream media's current practice of "journalism."
