Invited to speak at the National Press Club (NPC) in Washington, DC, last Friday, Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson apparently had the temerity to admonish the group of reporters and communications specialists seated before him.
Dr. Carson’s problem with the Washington press corps? They’re “embarrassing” and “insincere,” he said. So, Dr. Carson vowed to “expose” the institutional bias he says runs rampant throughout the mainstream media.
That’s “declaring war”? Exposing the truth when one’s views are purposely being misrepresented?
It is when the issue is not just tamping down the truth but casting a pall of silence over it by bullying people not only from speaking the truth in the public square but also drumming them out of the public square for speaking the truth.
Apparently, Dr. Carson is very well-aware of the game the mainstream media plays and doesn’t fear their power. To counter the image of a successful neurosurgeon, some media mainstream media outlets had already run planted stories accusing Dr. Carson of having committed medical malpractice. So, in a pre-emptive maneuver, he shot down what likely would be the next salvo, that of being “thin-skinned” and “sensitive.” He said to those assemble at the NPC:
Many in the press will say I’m sensitive and that I should not be thinking about running for office, because I get offended by what they do. But the reason I expose the press is because I want the people of America to understand what they’re doing. It’s not because I’m sensitive.
Exposing the truth when one’s views are purposely being misrepresented? That’s “declaring war”?
It is when when the mainstream media isn’t just trying to tamp down the truth but actually doing all it can to cast a pall of silence over the truth. How so? Bullying people not only from speaking the truth in the public square but also drumming them out of it should they have the temerity to speak the truth to the mainstream media’s power.
Is it Dr. Carson or the mainstream media that has declared war?
Instead of siding with the American people by bringing the truth to light in the public square, the mainstream media over the past 5 decades has morphed into a propaganda arm of the political Left. That’s a problem—the First Amendment’s constitutional guarantee of “freedom of the press” means “freedom to pursue and publish the facts”—but it is not the problem.
With more and more ideologically-driven media outlets available online bellowing the agenda of both the Left and the Right, it has become increasingly difficult for the public to ascertain exactly what the facts are. If ever there was a time when the press has an important contribution to make by doing the job the U.S. Constitution guarantees it, that time is now.
Sad to observe, however, the political Left has hijacked the profession of journalism and the people today are the worse for it. Exposing the mainstream media for what it has become is an expression of patriotism, not being “thin-skinned” or “sensitive.” And that it has happened is something that should bother sincere patriots of both the political Left and Right.
