Over at The Wanderer, James J. Kirkpatrick writes an eyepopping, "must read" article placing his finger right on a very raw nerve, especially in light of the recent civil unrest and lawlessness in Ferguson, MO.
Considering the years of Black-On-Black carnage in Chicago, Kirkpatrick raises the question--"What would Rudy Giuliani do?"--musing about why Mayor Rahm Emanuel doesn't seem to be doing anything about the long-term mayhem evidencing itself in Second City's crime statistics. After all, Emanuel is credited with stating, as President Obama's Chief of Staff, "Never let a crisis go to waste" which Emanuel translated as using "an opportunity to do things you could not do before.”
The answer? It's the liberals' inability to recognize the abject failure of their social policy. Kirkpatrick argues:
Imagine for a moment what Emanuel would be doing if the news reports
were of gangs of skinheads and Aryan supremacists driving through
Chicago at night gunning down black children, and then speeding off to
the suburbs. Do you think Emanuel and the civil rights establishment in
Chicago would want action? You can bet your bottom dollar that they
would. Chicago would be ringed as we speak with the National Guard,
guns at the ready.
By the way, some of that--short of the killings--happened in Chicago--in 1966 and 1986--if people remember Marquette Park. And, don't forget Chicago's Gage Park in 1966:

down on the black gangs would violate core tenets of the behaviorism,
economic determinism, and the theories about the “scars of racism”
that are central to liberalism’s understanding of crime.
It's a powerful article with a powerful argument that turns the table on the liberal social agenda. Kirkpatrick's conclusion:
The problem is their countervailing sympathy for the victims of our
sexist, racist, homophobic and greedy capitalist system—the criminals.
It is a sympathy that renders them impotent when confronted by
situations such as the gang violence in Chicago.
Socialism--Chicago Democratic Machine style--promises "hope and change" and its stormy petrils blare out "We want social justice." But, more than 50 years later, the hopes and promises never seem seem to translate into reality.
Kudos from The Motley Monk to James J. Kirkpatrick for speaking truth to political power not only in Chicago but in every urban locale where the events on the ground have followed exactly the same failed pattern.
